Heritage Garden & Lake

The gardens are on Shelby Township's municipal campus at 52700 Van Dyke Ave.

Enter off via campus entrance at Van Dyke Ave or from 24 Mile Road just east of Van Dyke Ave. The park is also accessible by walking path from Mae Stecker Park, located at 8600 24 Mile Road.

Open daily 8 a.m.-8 p.m. or dusk, whichever comes first. The park may be closed on major holidays and in extreme weather. The township reserves the right to close the park for inclement weather, reservations, programming activities or other circumstances.

Fishing is allowed in Heritage Lake. Patrons should refer to the current Michigan Department of Natural Resources fishing guide for license requirements.

The Shelby Gardeners Club helped found Heritage Garden in 1975. Club fundraisers support the brick walkways, planted beds, gazebo, statuary and the fairy garden. Fundraisers include craft and plant sales and bi-annual garden walks.

Along with the plantings, Heritage Garden has a growing collection of outdoor garden art. As a tribute to garden club volunteers' dedication, the club donated the Petal Point sculpture, which resides adjacent to the lake in Heritage Garden.

The club enhanced the entrance to Heritage Gardens thanks to a $1,610 donation from the Shelby Community Foundation. The grant covered the club's purchase of a six-foot concrete three-tier fountain. Volunteers and PRM staff converted the fountain into a focus planter near the entrance to Heritage Garden.

Founded in 1971, the Shelby Gardeners Club promotes interest and knowledge in gardening, flower arrangement and ecology. The group also helps protect native plants, trees and wildlife while encouraging civic planting and urban beautification. They seek to bring about brighter gardens and friendships and support recycling projects to recognize businesses and residents who share these goals.

The club hosts monthly meetings the second Thursday of each month at the Burgess-Shadbush Nature Center at 4101 River Bends Dr. For more information, contact the club at 586-823-8555.
