Shelby Township is gearing up for another unforgettable summer celebration on June 20-21 as the township hosts the 2025 Shelby Township Summer Fest, presented by the Shelby Township Downtown Development Authority, at the Shelby Township Civic Center Campus, 52700 Van Dyke Ave.
Set against the backdrop of the municipal campus, Summer Fest brings two days of excitement, entertainment, and family fun, culminating with the Shelby Township Independence Day Celebration.
“Last year, I asked Community Relations Director Brad Bates and his team to save our Independence Day Celebration, and they came up with the two-day Summer Fest celebration,” Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis said. “Based on the precedent established by the old Summer Kick-Off and Independence Day Fireworks show, I knew Brad’s team would find a way, but I had no idea it would be as good as it turned out.
“Between all of the kids having a blast with the Touch-a-Truck and Treehouse Live on Friday and then the symphony and drones on Saturday, they exceeded our expectations, and I know they are going to make it even better this year.”
The Shelby Township Summer Fest continues the Shelby Township Downtown Development Authority’s work to support the local economy through community events such as Summer Fest and the annual Shelby Township Christmas Aglow.
“Supporting businesses along the Van Dyke Ave. corridor is our focus and bringing more than 10,000 people to our municipal campus every summer will certainly contribute to that mission,” DDA Chair Greg Gagnon said. “We were saddened that we lost the Independence Day Fireworks on Van Dyke when we couldn’t find a suitable launch site, but Summer Fest has more than sufficed as a replacement.”
Kicking off on June 20 from 4-11 p.m., Summer Fest attendees can enjoy a wide variety of activities, including DJ entertainment, Touch-a-Truck, strolling princesses and superheroes, face painting, magicians, and a petting zoo—ensuring fun for all ages.
There will also be a craft beer tent and food truck rally courtesy of Connect Macomb.
New this year, festivalgoers can enjoy a Swiftie Dance Party at 5 p.m. on June 20 before the live taping of Shelby TV’s award-winning “The Treehouse” at 6:30 p.m.
The Swiftie Dance Party gives fans of all ages the chance to trade friendship bracelets and get their hair braided with tinsel and glitter before starring in music videos broadcast on the township’s 24-foot video walls while they sing and dance along to their favorite Taylor Swift songs.
After the dance party, join “The Treehouse” for special segments like science demonstrations from the Michigan Science Center and animal encounters from the Reptarium.
As the sun sets, another exciting new feature takes center stage with an electrifying live performance from Detroit’s premier cover band, Parallel Fifth, at 8:30 p.m. This free concert promises to keep the energy high and the crowd dancing into the night.
Also new this year is the Sensory Space in Hope Chapel. Partnering with Oakland University’s Joanne and Ted Lindsay Foundation Autism Outreach Services, commonly known as OUCARES, the township now offers a space for those with sensory sensitivities to relax and enjoy the festivities in a setting free from loud noises, bright lights, and crowded areas. The sensory room will be open for the duration of both days of Summer Fest.
The excitement continues from 6-10 p.m. on June 21 as the township celebrates America with a patriotic spectacle featuring a live performance by the renowned Macomb Symphony Orchestra.
On June 21, families can enjoy the Kids Zone, presented by the Friends of the Shelby Township Library, with a rock-climbing wall, toddler bounce house, a 60-foot obstacle course, a 24-foot inflatable slide, backyard games, and more. There will also be face painting, a petting zoo, and DJ entertainment from 4-7 p.m. The Connect Macomb Craft Beer Tent and Food Truck Rally will also be open throughout the day.
Starting at 7 p.m. on June 21, the celebration of America begins with the 1st Michigan Colonial Fife & Drum Corps presenting the colors before the Macomb Symphony Orchestra takes the stage. The night concludes with a breathtaking drone show during the symphony’s finale, offering a modern and visually stunning tribute to America’s independence.
“Shelby Township, home to a lot of veterans and active-duty families, loves America, and we love to show it off,” said Township Trustee Lucia Di Cicco, who also serves on the DDA. “If you come out to the show on June 21 and you see the drum and fife corps, the symphony, the red, white, and blue drones, and all of the flags being waved, you can’t help but get caught up in the celebration of our great nation.”
